Mahogany Run Golf Course

United States Virgin Islands

Mahogany Run Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-70 championship course measuring 6,000 yards, designed by renowned architects George and Tom Fazio and opened in 1980. Located on the northern side of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands near Magen's Bay, the course is carved from challenging terrain featuring tight, winding fairways set within approximately 110 acres of lush tropical landscape surrounded by dense rainforest. The course requires precision play over distance, with an emphasis on accuracy given its compact design and numerous doglegs. The course is most famous for its signature "Devil's Triangle," comprising holes 13, 14, and 15. The 13th is a dogleg-left par-4 playing to a narrow green perched above a rocky cove. The 14th, a par-3, sits approximately 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean on a cliff-top location with sweeping views of the British Virgin Islands. The 15th, a 564-yard par-5, features a pond in front of the green. The course offers scenic Caribbean vistas throughout, with elevation changes ranging from 80 to 200 feet above sea level and exposure to steady trade winds that add to the playing challenge. The course was ranked as the U.S. Virgin Islands' number-one golf course by Golf Digest in 2022 and historically hosted prestigious tournaments and visited by notable dignitaries. The facility included a pro shop, driving range, and fine dining at The Grille restaurant. The course ceased operations in 2018 following Hurricane damage and currently awaits redevelopment.

The course is divided into an out and in nine, with the front nine measuring 3,374 yards from the black tees and the back nine measuring 3,437 yards. The par breakdown includes four par-5s, ten par-4s, and four par-3s. The longest holes are the 4th and 11th, both playing 539 yards and 537 yards respectively from the black tees. Kobayashi’s design philosophy at Maibara emphasizes a harmony between nature and sportsmanship, incorporating water features that serve as the primary defensive element. The course requires players to navigate these water hazards and bunkers strategically, as the relatively flat terrain means that accuracy and course management are critical. The layout is intended to test a player's ability to adapt to the specific demands of each hole, which are designed to offer different strategic options depending on the tee shot and wind conditions. Maibara Golf Club is affiliated with the Japan Golf Association, the Korea Golf Association, and the China Golf Association. The facility offers a 20-bay driving range and provides various amenities including a restaurant, hotel accommodation, and a pro shop. Maidenhead Golf Course

Berkshire

Maidstone Club

NY

Founded in 1891, Maidstone Club is a private, family-oriented country club located in the picturesque village of East Hampton, New York. The 9-hole and 18-hole courses, originally designed by Willie Park Jr., are consistently rated among the "Top 100 Courses" in the country. It was founded as a 7-hole course in 1894 and expanded to 18 holes in 1899. In 1924 Willie Park, Jr. and his brother Jack designed the 80-acre Gardiner Peninsula addition, and the expansion resulted in the club having two 18-hole courses, but this was reduced to the current 27-hole layout by the hurricane of 1938. Maidstone is surrounded by two golf courses along the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Its opening and closing holes are partly routed on the inland side of a large tidal pond, with the central twelve squeezed onto a tight 80-acre peninsula wedged between the water and the spotless beachside dunes, which to many is as close to genuine linksland as exists in America. The routing on the 80 acres on Gardiner's Peninsula and the remaining 50 acres introduces multiple hazards at various angles, including a marsh, Hook Pond, sand dunes, beach grass, reeds, well-placed bunkers, out of bounds and the ever-present wind. Ben Crenshaw performed extensive renovations in 2012. Legend has it that Bobby Jones felt that Maidstone's final three holes made it one of the great match-play courses in America. In 2014, Maidstone was ranked #37 in Golf Magazine's "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." list, and #67 in their "Top 100 Courses in the World" list. The 9th hole at 402 yards is one of the finest two-shot holes in all of golf, found along the Atlantic coast with the ocean and beach on the right and sand dunes framing the tight fairway.

Majestic Hills Golf Course

NY

Located at 2505 Boulders Drive in Denison, Iowa, Majestic Hills Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole championship layout with a par 71 from all five sets of tees. The course is defined by significant elevation changes on nearly every hole, featuring bent grass greens that range in size and shape but are never flat. Many greens possess multi-level surfaces designed to challenge even the most skilled putters. The fairways are planted in bluegrass and rye, offering very few level lies, while the thick bluegrass rough comes into play on almost every hole. The course design incorporates a mix of risk-reward opportunities and strategic demands. There are a few driveable par fours that offer options for long hitters, but the layout is heavily characterized by its five signature par 3 holes, where making par in a round is considered a significant accomplishment. The back nine features long par 5s that are often played into the prevailing south wind, extending their distance. Sand traps are sparse and primarily positioned to prevent balls from ending up in worse areas, such as out of bounds or thick rough. Specific holes present distinct challenges, such as the 180-yard 15th hole, which is the longest on the course. This par 4 requires an elevated tee shot over water on the right side, with a sharp slope that narrows toward a green tucked into a tree-lined pocket. The 17th hole is a par 3 that requires crossing a lake to a shallow green built into the side of a hill, where steep banks guard the front and back. The 18th hole serves as a downhill finishing par 4 with out of bounds along the right side and hazards guarding the green. The 2nd hole is noted as the 2nd handicap hole, featuring an uphill drive to a narrow fairway with out of bounds on the right and a small green tucked into the slope. The 1st hole is the 1st handicap hole, an uphill par 4 with out of bounds on both sides of the tee shot and a two-tiered green. The course accommodates various skill levels, offering a competitive round for golfers of all ages, though the undulating terrain and thick rough ensure a demanding test of golf.
