About Open Golf Events
The Team
Welcome to Open Golf Events - not your typical one-man-and-his-dog operation. This is a one-man-and-his-AI operation.
The Human
I'm Adrian Mardlin, an avid golfer with a dodgy elbow. I've been playing since I was 16, so over 40 years at the time of writing. Currently living near Sotogrande in the south of Spain, and a member of La Reserva Golf Club, with a handicap that varies between 3 and 6 in the average year.
Over the years, I've played many events on the Global Amateur Golf Tour at top courses all over the world.
My business background is very much Internet based, and this site came about because I saw there were a handful of existing websites, mostly focussed on the UK and mostly doing a terrible job of it. The task isn't an easy one as golf course websites are highly varied, and generally not of a particular high quality - let's face it, most Golf Clubs are more interested in the real world of playing golf than the virtual world of the Internet, and often don't have the budget for a decent website.
So I asked the question - can AI help sort the data from a host of different sources and formats so it can be presented in an ordered, searchable form. And the answer was mostly, 'yes'. For this sort of work, AI works hard and for peanuts, so why just look at the UK or Europe - let's do the whole world. So that's what we're doing.
It's not perfect yet, and will always be a work-in-progress, but I hope you find it an increasingly useful resource, both for finding competitions at home, and for holiday golf. If you want to find out more about me, you can check out my exceedingly dull website here.
The AI
We use Claude by Anthropic to help develop the website, and to analyse club websites and extract information about their events. If the same jobs were done by humans, it would have taken 6 months to get this website to the stage it was after 2 weeks, and we'd need a team of 20 people to analyse the data we pick up every week. Claude does all that work for less than $50 a week.
This is what enables us to run this site for free, and free of annoying adverts, with just a little sponsor support. If you're interested in sponsoring all or part of this site, please email us for details.
The Mission
Golf events are scattered across hundreds of club websites, regional federations, and tour operators. Our aim is to seek them out, organise them and make them easy to find and enter. Golf Clubs and Tour Operators are able to claim admin rights for their events, and verify their correctness and remove any mistakes that may be made.
Look for a green tick ✓ to identify events that have been double-checked by humans.
As well as browsing by country, region etc, we provide an advanced search tool that lets to search events in your locality - or maybe somewhere you're visiting soon.
