The layout mixes short and long holes, with many bordering tidal marshes, lagoons, and the Intracoastal Waterway, known to east coast golfers as the world's longest water hazard. Shaped by tidal marshes, coastal breezes, and strategic bunkers, its fast greens demand accuracy. Tom Fazio considers it one of his favorites, and the course delivers championship-level play suited to golfers of varying skill levels.

The front nine was hilly with many elevation changes mostly with some holes along the marshes, while the back nine was a lot flatter with a few holes on the ocean. Once a par-5, the 18th now concludes as a scenic par-3 beside the shoreline, delivering one of the Lowcountry's most unforgettable finishes. The 17th is one of the best holes in the Southeast.
