The Gailes Golf Course

MI

Designed by Kevin Aldridge, The Gailes is an 18-hole, par-72 links-style course located in Oscoda, Michigan, that recreates the aesthetic of Scotland's seaside golf courses. The course features championship tees at 6,954 yards with multiple tee options accommodating various skill levels down to 5,246 yards. The Gailes incorporates authentic Scottish links design elements including large double greens, meandering berms, sod-faced pot bunkers, and long fescue grasses. The 10th hole exemplifies the course's character—a 348-yard par-4 presenting significant challenge through seven deep bunkers, thick knee-high fescue rough, and a meandering burn along the left. Lake Huron's winds add unpredictability to play. The course's terrain and design create genuine links golf difficulty, with hazards strategically positioned to penalize imprecise shot placement. The routing balances par-3s, par-4s, and par-5s throughout the eighteen holes, with the most challenging handicap holes being the 459-yard par-4 fifth hole and the 489-yard par-4 thirteenth hole. The landscape and strategic bunkering demand precision and course management, offering an authentic seaside golf experience in Michigan.

The Gauntlet Golf Club

VA

The Gauntlet Golf Club opened in 1995 as a par 72, 6,900-yard, P.B. Dye championship layout featuring lush zoysia fairways and smooth bentgrass greens set around the lake of Curtis Memorial Park in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The course is semi-public and features the area's largest grass practice facility. The course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses, with a slew of blind shots. The back nine is gentler with less water and is more open and forgiving, though the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The Gauntlet awards precision, where most holes are target-oriented, narrow and tree-lined. The fourth hole is the signature hole, requiring a tee shot to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5, with a triple-tiered green faced by the lake to the left and bunkers to the right. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the top ten new courses to play in the U.S. The course has also been recognized in Washington Golf Monthly's "100 Best Courses to Play in the Mid-Atlantic".

The Golf Club

OH

The Golf Club is an 18-hole course in New Albany, Ohio featuring 7,268 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72, designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1967. The course rating is 75.3 with a slope rating of 140. This rural retreat in suburban Columbus is where Jack Nicklaus first learned about design, as an unpaid consultant. Built in 1966, The Golf Club is one of Pete Dye's transition period designs, when he began bucking convention with lay-of-the-land layouts inspired by his 1963 tour of Scotland, reintroducing deception, misdirection and railroad ties into American golf architecture. The course features bunkers and water hazards framed by railroad ties and tall native grasses scattered throughout. The signature hole is the 3rd, a 220-yard par 3 featuring railroad ties and a diabolical design. The 16th is a 200-yard, par 3. The course is consistently ranked in the top 50 courses in the United States by major golf publications. It holds a 2025-'26 ranking of 46th in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest and has been ranked in the top 5 in Ohio since 1977. Pete Dye returned in 2014 to rebuild holes, modestly adjusting green contours and relocating the fifth green with a contorted putting surface reminiscent of his later designs.
