The resort consists of ten 18-hole golf courses, each named simply by a number, an 18 hole putting course, and a 9-hole short course. Pinehurst No. 2, the flagship course, measures 7,551 yards and is a Donald Ross design. The course is characterized by its iconic sloped turtleback greens and wide fairways with native wiregrass and sand. Water comes into sight on only one hole and is not in play, while the course is not particularly long, though the rough is native sandscape and wire grass. Pinehurst No. 2 has served as the site of more single golf championships than any other course in America, hosting back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open Championships in 2014 and the 2024 U.S. Open. The resort has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments including four U.S. Open Championships, one U.S. Women's Open, three U.S. Amateurs, one PGA Championship, and the Ryder Cup. Pinehurst No. 9 was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is the only Nicklaus course in the North Carolina Sandhills region. Originally opened in 1989 as the National Golf Club, this course was acquired by Pinehurst in 2014. A par 72 measuring 7,118 yards, the course features wide, tree-lined fairways and undulating greens. The course is set among the pines with natural areas, water hazards, and elevated and undulating green complexes that make No. 9 one of Pinehurst's more challenging courses. With relatively few waste areas and some interesting water hazards, No. 9 is a challenging course. Differing in style from the eight other Pinehurst courses, No. 9 is a Jack Nicklaus signature design featuring bentgrass greens, forgiving fairways and five sets of tees. The course has not hosted major championships but serves as part of the Pinehurst Resort's collection of championship-caliber courses.
