Originally designed and built by Dr. Leroy Culver and later enhanced by both John Dunn Tucker and Donald Ross, Pinehurst No. 1 is located in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The par-70 course spans slightly more than 6,000 yards, offering a mix of challenging and rewarding holes, with wide fairways and lots of birdie opportunities. The course was cut from the land without the use of bulldozers, so it features minimal grading changes.
The course's layout demands precision and thoughtful shot placement, with undulating greens and well-placed hazards that reflect Ross's design philosophy. Despite its modest length, don't let the short layout give a false sense of confidence—No. 1 can be more imposing than it first appears, as wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. The course is beautifully integrated into the natural landscape, featuring towering pines and a serene parkland setting.
The No. 1 course is a classic due to not only its age, but also its appeal to golfers of all skill levels. While detailed tournament history for No. 1 specifically is limited, the broader Pinehurst Resort has hosted numerous major championships throughout its history.
