Pinehurst No. 4 is an 18-hole course with a par of 72 and measures 7,227 yards. Originally designed by Donald Ross in 1919, the course has undergone multiple redesigns over the years, with the most notable being Gil Hanse's 2018 redesign. Hanse's redesign focused on the natural landscape, taking advantage of the area's rolling topography and ridgelines to create beautiful vistas and an old world feel. The course quickly gained acclaim, with Golf Magazine naming it the best new course of 2018 and Golf Digest ranking it second on their list of best new courses in 2019.

The course features wide and forgiving fairways and accepting green complexes, with design elements intended to emphasize fun and appeal to golfers of varying skill levels. Notable holes include holes 13, 14, and 15, which feature a lake. The 13th hole is a 529-yard par 5 that serves as a classic risk/reward hole beginning a dramatic stretch of holes. The course was chosen to host the 2019 U.S. Amateur, making it a venue for significant amateur championship golf.
