Pinehurst No. 2 is an 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 7,020 yards, designed by Donald Ross and completed in 1907. The course is located in the North Carolina Sandhills, situated within a resort setting featuring multiple courses. The course is known for its iconic sloped turtleback greens and wide fairways with native wiregrass and sand. A restoration project completed by Coore & Crenshaw in 2011 reestablished the course's design attributes, and there is no rough on the entire course.
The greens have been called the best complexes ever built, with hollows and undulations created around them like those found on Scottish links. The famous domed greens look big, but the effective landing areas are small with the slightest miscalculation being punished to the fullest extent. The course presents a significant challenge requiring precision and strategic shot-making across all aspects of play.
The course has hosted five men's majors including the 1936 PGA Championship and U.S. Opens in 1999, 2005, 2014, and 2024, with additional U.S. Opens scheduled for 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047. It also hosted the 1951 Ryder Cup and the 2014 U.S. Women's Open. Pinehurst No. 2 is the site of more championships than any other course in America.
