There's also the double-dogleg, par-five 12th with an elevated green surrounded by trees and underbrush. At the 1992 Big I Junior Classic, it became the site of Tiger Woods' only Pinehurst victory. The course is located approximately a mile from the main resort clubhouse and features its own practice facilities. Unlike the Bay Course, the Pines winds its way through New Jersey woodlands, presenting elevation changes and bountiful doglegs. William Flynn designed the first nine holes in 1929 while another nine holes were added to complete the eighteen hole circuit in 1957. The golf course has tight fairways lined with trees, medium-sized greens that are undulating, and strategically placed bunkers. The signature hole, number 9, is a 510-yard par 5 that presents the only water hazard on the entire course. Tee shots must avoid the trees that line both sides of the fairway. Second shots must safely navigate over the hole's only water hazard. Because it's an older course, the layout is really traditional with a lot of doglegs and narrow fairways, no gimmicks, just old fashioned golf. Some golfers prefer the Pines course because of its quiet location behind the resort's hotel and also because of its more challenging features.
