Culbertson Hills Golf Club

PA

Culbertson Hills Golf Club is an 18-hole course located in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. The layout features a mix of challenging holes with varied difficulty levels across both front and back nines. Notable characteristics include several demanding par threes, with holes like the 13th measuring over 200 yards and guarded by a creek, and the signature 7th hole requiring an accurate 200-yard tee shot over water to a green protected by trees and rough. The course incorporates water hazards, grass bunkers, and undulating greens throughout. The back nine is particularly challenging, with the 9th hole rated as the course's most difficult—a 587-yard uphill par five requiring power and accuracy, with out of bounds down the entire left side. Cullasaja Club

NC

Opened in 1990, the 6,856-yard par-72 layout navigates the mountain topography with remarkable sensitivity to the natural environment. Established by Arvida Corporation in 1987 as a second-home escape from the southern heat, Cullasaja Club transitioned to a private, invitation-only club in 2000. At an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet, this championship course offers golfers a rare opportunity to test their skills against one of Palmer's most thoughtful mountain designs. Palmer's design at Cullasaja Club showcases his philosophy of creating courses that are challenging for skilled players while remaining enjoyable for average golfers. The front nine presents a relatively gentler introduction, featuring wider fairways that wind alongside picturesque water features. As you make the turn, the back nine intensifies the challenge with more significant elevation changes and tighter landing areas that demand precision. There is a trio of waterfalls on the course and two of the holes wind around Ravenel Lake. The mountain setting creates optical illusions that can complicate distance judgment – shots typically play shorter than the yardage suggests due to the elevation. Nestled within an ancient forest stretching from Highlands to Whiteside Mountain, the community is dotted with century-old trees and the flowing Cullasaja River. Bentgrass greens roll true and fast, while the fairways and rough are meticulously maintained throughout the playing season.

Culver Academies Golf Course

IN

Nestled between Lake Maxinkuckee and Culver Woodcraft Camp, the nine-hole course is one of the finest Golden Age designs created by William Langford and Theodore Moreau and restored in 2015 by Bobby Weed Golf Design. The course plays to a par of 36 and measures 3,228 yards. The routing includes three par-5s, par-4s and par-3s, with large greens that possess bold interior contouring. Prior to restoration, every original bunker was overgrown with grass and putting greens had shrunk significantly in size; the restoration recreated all the bunkers and expanded the putting surfaces by more than a third. Every putting surface is open in front, allowing the option of running shots onto the green, which is available given the firm course conditions. Langford & Moreau spread 36 bunkers across the original nine holes, which were all restored to their intended locations and sizes. Since its restoration, Golfweek ranked the course as the number 2 campus golf course in America, second only to Yale University. The restored course is considered by some commentators to be the best 9-hole golf course in the USA. Construction started in 1922 and the course opened for play in late spring of 1924. The course is exclusive to Culver Academies students, faculty, staff, and alumni, with a practice area complete with a driving range, short game areas, and putting green, as well as a beautiful new Golf House.
