Irene Golf Course

Gauteng

Irene Country Club's 18-hole golf course dates back to 1912, when Laurie Waters designed nine holes. The layout was later expanded to an 18-hole configuration in the following decade through Bob Grimsdell and his brother. In 2007, Phil Jacobs revamped all of the greens and green complexes, rebuilt the tees, and renovated the fairway bunkers. The course is a par 72 with 6200 yards. Situated 15 minutes southeast of Pretoria in the picturesque suburb of Irene, the course offers scenic fairways and mature trees. Driving and iron play must be strong due to many trees, well-placed bunkers, and the Hennops River. The 7th hole, called "The Pulpit," is the signature hole—a par 3 at 151 yards requiring a thrilling tee shot from an elevated position over the Hennops River to a green below. The 14th hole ("van der Byl") is a 480-yard par 4 and the most difficult hole of the back nine, with out-of-bounds right, trees on the right side, and water hazards fronting and backing the green. Originally established as a golf club in 1911, Irene Country Club has expanded to include tennis, cricket, bowls, and squash. Irene hosts the Gauteng North Silver Salver for top amateurs.
