Inwood Country Club is an 18-hole private golf course established in 1901 on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 20 miles from Manhattan. Originally built as a nine-hole course, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1906 and redesigned by architect Herbert Strong during golf's golden age of architecture. The course measures 6,632 yards with a slope rating of 134 and features an unusual front nine layout with three consecutive par-5s followed by two consecutive par-3s. Twelve holes border Jamaica Bay wetlands, providing water views and vistas of the Manhattan skyline.
The course is known for its demanding conditions created by ever-changing winds and subtle, nuanced design elements intended for a member's course. Inwood hosted two major championships in the early 1920s: the 1921 PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen and the 1923 U.S. Open won by 21-year-old amateur Bobby Jones, with Jones's victory occurring on the famous 18th hole. The closing hole is regarded as one of the most notable finishing holes in the New York metropolitan area.
Beyond golf, Inwood Country Club operates as a comprehensive private club with a private beach club on the Atlantic Ocean, ten Har-Tru tennis courts, and a fitness center. The club has undergone modernization efforts over recent years, including bunkering improvements and architectural refinements while preserving its historical character and classic design principles.
