Maples designed Apple Valley with the vast majority of holes playing either level or downhill. The course offers five sets of tees starting at 4,617 yards with subtle green complexes and gently undulating greens, making it playable for different skill levels. Mountain lakes adorn 12 holes on Apple Valley, but water only occasionally comes into play. The back nine is widely regarded as one of the best closing stretches in the Western Carolinas. The par-3 14th hole, with its shallow green and back bunker, is reminiscent of No. 12 at Augusta National. The course has hosted numerous championships and tournaments. The North Carolina Golf Panel ranks Apple Valley in the Top 100 Best Courses in North Carolina.

The ninth and eighteenth holes feature the "quarry," a sandy area that offers views of the entire course. Applebrook has been ranked in Golf Digest's Top 15 best courses in Pennsylvania for 2013 and 2019-2026. In 2019, Applebrook hosted the GAP Patterson Cup. As a walking golf club, Applebrook maintains one of the finest caddie programs in the country.
