Country Club

VA

The Country Club of Virginia is a private country club located in Richmond, Virginia, spanning 1,111 acres and containing three eighteen-hole golf courses. The club features three golf courses: the Westhampton Course, James River Course, and Tuckahoe Creek Course. Westhampton opened on June 18, 1910, originally designed by Herbert Barker and redesigned by Donald Ross in 1920. Westhampton plays to a maximum yardage of 6,214 yards from the blue tees with a slope rating of 127. The James River Course first opened on June 30, 1928, designed by William Flynn, and became a championship course hosting numerous tournaments including the 1955 and 1975 USGA Men's Amateur Championships. Flynn's design features nine holes from the more level Valley course on the front nine and nine holes from the more undulating Hill course on the back nine. Tuckahoe Creek Course opened in 1988, designed by Joseph L. Lee and Rocky Roquemore, as a par-72 layout playing to 6,933 yards. Westhampton possesses gently rolling fairways carved out of majestic pine and oak forests with small, sloping greens that can make putting difficult, especially from above the pin. Tuckahoe Creek features 76 bunkers and seven lakes and a creek that affect play throughout the course, requiring accurate iron play and smooth putting to negotiate the large, undulating greens. The James River Course has hosted many prominent events, including the 1955 and 1975 U.S. Amateurs and, since 2016, the annual Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Country Club of Asheville

NC

Founded in 1894, the Country Club of Asheville moved to its current site in 1928 when Donald Ross designed its 18-hole course, which was subsequently upgraded by Richard Mandell in 2016. The course measures 6,638 yards with a par 72 and slope rating of 120. The course is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and features notable views, with hole 16 being a distinctive 600-yard par five that is particularly prominent. The course offers a nice variety of hole designs with the primary defense coming from the green complexes, which feature slopes that can be severe on some holes. The course underwent extensive restoration in 2016, including installation of new 007 Bentgrass on all 18 greens, restoration of a creek crossing on hole 10, creation of a new practice facility, and rerouting of cart paths. During the restoration, architect Richard Mandell focused on discovering and returning work Ross had created in 1928, incorporating knowledge of Ross's design while uncovering some original greens that had been buried. The course features 18 holes, plays to 6,776 yards, and was designed by Seth Raynor, opening in 1925. Raynor incorporated some of his trademark replica short holes into the design, including an Eden green at the 162-yard 3rd, a reverse Redan at the 187-yard 11th, and a 145-yard Short at the 17th. Other notable holes include back-to-back short par fours at the 364-yard 13th and 333-yard 14th, as well as a 432-yard par four at the 16th with an enormous "Lion's Mouth" bunker fronting the green. Three top amateur events are held at the course every year: the men's Azalea Invitational dating back to 1946, the men's Senior Azalea, and the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea. The club hosted the US Women's Amateur championship in 2013 and staged the US Women's Open in 2019.
