The Country Club of Fairfield was founded in 1914 by Oliver Gould Jennings on land originally called Mosquito Hill, formerly consisting of onion fields and tidal marsh. Seth Raynor, a protégé of Charles Blair Macdonald, designed the golf course in a links-style layout featuring replicas of renowned British Isles holes. The ambitious landfill project required several years to complete, with the course officially opening in 1921. Hall of Fame golfer Walter Hagen attended the inaugural day. Located in Fairfield, Connecticut, the course was built on challenging terrain that required significant earthwork to transform swampy marshland into playable fairways. The design reflects early 20th-century American golf course architecture, incorporating strategic bunkering and hole configurations inspired by classic British links courses, creating a challenging layout that demands precision and course management.
