The sub-6,700 yard design is a welcome return to shotmaking, emphasizing strategy over length. The course features small, elevated, sloping greens that are its main defense against par. The par-4 eighth hole is considered the most difficult, stretching 440 yards from the back tees with bunkers everywhere, including deep bunkers on each side of the long and narrow green. Walking is promoted with caddies available. The course has been ranked inside the top 15 of South Carolina's best courses for 2013-'16 and 2019-'22, and inside the top 20 for 2011-'12, 2017-'18, and 2023-'26. The design is a throwback to simpler golf, avoiding the artificial mounding, long green-to-tee hikes, decorative waste bunkers, and excessive water hazards that characterize many modern coastal South Carolina courses.
