Briars Golf Club

Ontario

Briars Golf Club, designed by renowned architect Stanley Thompson, opened in 1922 in Sutton West, Ontario. The course began as a nine-hole layout that challenged golfers from its inception and earned recognition as one of Ontario's finest nine-hole courses. The layout was expanded to eighteen holes in 1972, marking a significant milestone in the club's history. Set in a cottager-oriented community, the course is situated on leased land originally containing the original nine holes. The terrain and design reflect Thompson's creative direction, establishing Briars as part of golf's historic landscape alongside other legendary Thompson-designed courses. The course presents considerable difficulty, having challenged golfers consistently since its opening. The original clubhouse, built in 1926, remains in use as the Briars Teahouse. The club's maintenance standards evolved significantly over the decades, from manual watering and scythe-cut rough in earlier years to modern greenskeeping practices. Club competitions and inter-club events have been central to its history, with weekend play being the primary focus throughout its operation.

Briarwood & Walnut Grove Courses (The Villages)

FL

Briarwood is a par 27 executive course with 9 holes that plays 950 yards from the front tees and 1,461 yards from the back tees. Designed by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton and opened in 2001, the course is located on the northern edge of The Villages, adjacent to the Nancy Lopez Legacy Championship Course. Briarwood features rolling pastures and numerous water hazards and wetlands that golfers must carry from the tees to reach large, sloping greens. The course is characterized by its challenging layout and significant distances between holes. The signature ninth hole stretches 206 yards from the back tees and is guarded by massive bunkers on the left, with trees on the right, making it one of the most difficult par 3s in The Villages. Multiple bunkers protect greens throughout the course, and the undulating green surfaces require precise putting. Water carries and length from the back tees present particular challenges for longer hitters. Briarwood shares operational facilities with its sister course, Walnut Grove, with both courses using the same starter shack. Golfers can play from three sets of tees, allowing for varying difficulty levels. The course is part of The Villages Executive Golf Trail, a network of nine-hole par 27 courses exclusive to residents and authorized guests.

Designed by Mac Hunter, an accomplished player and golf course consultant, the course spans multiple tees with varying yardages to accommodate different skill levels. Signature holes include the par-3 15th, rated as one of Montana's most difficult at over 200 yards from the blue tees with out-of-bounds and lateral hazards, and the finishing par-4 18th at 582 yards, which requires precise positioning off the tee to avoid cottonwoods lining Bridger Creek.
