The Renaissance Club

East Lothian

The Renaissance Club is an 18-hole links-style course located on the Archerfield Estate in East Lothian, Scotland, approximately four miles west of North Berwick and twenty miles east of Edinburgh. The course was designed by American architect Tom Doak and opened in 2008, carved out of around 300 acres of pine forest on a site bordering the grounds of Muirfield, home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The course plays to a par of 71 and stretches to nearly 7,300 yards from the championship tees. It was conceived by American developer Jerry Sarvadi with an explicit brief to produce a layout capable of hosting professional championships. The original routing underwent a significant revision following a land exchange with the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers around 2011, through which The Renaissance Club acquired a portion of dune land on the Firth of Forth coastline. Three new holes along the water's edge — the ninth, tenth, and eleventh — were inserted into the middle of the layout, replacing the original opening three holes, which were retained as a practice loop. The revised course features an unusual configuration of five par 3s and three par 5s. An ancient stone wall unearthed during construction runs through portions of the course and comes into play on several holes, including the drivable par-4 fifth and the closing eighteenth. Deep pot bunkers and heavy fescue rough frame the fairways throughout. The par-3 ninth is widely regarded as the course's signature hole, playing uphill toward the Firth of Forth with views across to Fidra Island and the North Sea. The eighth, a par 4 of over 500 yards playing uphill, is considered among the most demanding on the card. The course has hosted the Genesis Scottish Open as a co-sanctioned PGA Tour and DP World Tour event annually since 2019, with past winners including Bernd Wiesberger, Aaron Rai, Min Woo Lee, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy. It also staged the Scottish Senior Open in 2017 and the Ladies Scottish Open in 2019 and 2020.
