The Wolverine is an 18-hole course designed by Gary Player in 1999. The course plays to par 72 and stretches 7045 yards from the back tees. Gary Player's first signature course in Michigan is designed to take full advantage of the Resort's diverse environment with flexibility, versatility, and playability accommodating golfers of all abilities through four sets of tees.
Each nine is distinctive, with the front nine constructed on lowland terrain featuring water and wetlands that were enhanced to interweave with several holes, while the back nine is constructed on highland terrain with hardwoods, rolling hills, and views of East Grand Traverse Bay. The greens are undulating while water comes into play on 13 holes. Other features include strategically placed white-sand bunkers, several large lakes, rolling fairways, and gently contoured greens.
The course record is 63, shot during the first round of the 2008 Michigan Open by Brian Stuard of Jackson, Michigan. The course is challenging for low handicappers, yet playable and enjoyable for high handicappers and is capable of being set up as a true test for professional tournaments.
