The Bear was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened on June 17, 1985. The course is a par 72, links-style layout featuring Scottish terraced fairways, tiered greens, deep grassy roughs, moguls, mounds, and deep pot bunkers. The course measures over 7,000 yards with a slope and rating of 76.1/150. Located near Traverse City in Acme, Michigan, The Bear features rolling land, trees, lakes, streams, fruit orchards, and a variety of wildlife.
The Bear is celebrated as one of the toughest 18 holes in Michigan and was ranked as the 18th toughest course in America according to Golf Digest. The course was ranked for 10 years on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public list. One of the signature holes is the Par 4 18th Hole that plays around a large pond.
