The Woodlands is an 18-hole, regulation par 69, 5,400 yard golf course located at 9 Woodland Road in Hampton, near Hampton University. Donald Ross designed the original course and the current design was completed by Ed Ault in 1973. The course was originally built in 1916 and is listed in Golf Magazine as one of the "First 100 Clubs in America."
The course has Bentgrass greens and Bermuda rough and fairways, with the Hampton River winding through the course and bringing water into play on 11 of the holes. The course includes 52 sand bunkers. While the short yardage may be deceiving, this is a shot maker's golf course. The course offers four sets of tee markers and is friendly to men, women, and children of all ages.
The Woodlands is home to a number of popular area tournaments, among them the Hampton Amateur and the Virginia Tech Alumni. The course is characterized as always being in great shape no matter the season and offers an excellent test of shot making.
