The Manor of Groves Golf Course

Hertfordshire

Manor of Groves Golf Course is an 18-hole parkland course set within 150 acres of rolling Hertfordshire countryside at High Wych, near Sawbridgeworth, close to the Hertfordshire and Essex border. The course opened in 1991 and plays to a par of 71 over 6,237 yards. It is attached to a Georgian manor house hotel and winds its way around the estate grounds, with USGA sand-based greens that support year-round play and good drainage throughout the layout. No prominent course designer is recorded in the club's history. The layout divides into two contrasting nine-hole loops. Holes four through twelve thread through the older manor gardens, where overhanging trees, tighter lines, and closer confinement create a more intimate challenge, while the opening three holes and the closing six play across wider, more open parkland with sweeping fairways and longer carry distances. Ditches and water hazards feature on a number of holes across both halves, adding a further layer of strategic decision-making. The greens are raised on several holes, making club selection into approach shots a key part of managing a score. Two of the par 5s measure around 600 yards, with the eighteenth — a par 5 of approximately 600 yards — forming a notably demanding closing hole that requires sustained length and accuracy to negotiate. The par-3 tenth is considered one of the tighter and more exacting short holes on the course. The clubhouse, known as the Viewing Gallery, overlooks the first tee and eighteenth green.
