The Retreat at Manistee National is a traditional-style golf course designed by prominent Michigan architect Gary Pulsipher and opened in 1993. The course meanders through forests of tall white pine interspersed with ancient oaks, creating a scenic woodland setting. Originally known as "Canthooke Valley," The Retreat was the first course built at the Manistee National resort.
The layout features generous fairways with minimal forced carries, making it accessible to golfers of all abilities while still challenging skilled players. The course is characterized by moderately sized bentgrass greens that are well-bunkered, with strategic hazards including ponds, marshes, and trees throughout. Each hole possesses individual character and personality, enhanced by recent renovations.
The Retreat offers multiple tee options accommodating various skill levels. From the blue tees, the course plays to 6,517 yards with a 71.6 rating and 134 slope. White tees measure 6,127 yards (69.5 rating/129 slope), while gold tees play 5,288 yards (64.9 rating/118 slope), and red tees play 4,778 yards (66.3 rating/114 slope). The course is designed to be playable for high handicappers while providing sufficient challenge for scratch golfers.
