Rockaway Hunting Club

NY

Rockaway Hunting Club is a country club and sporting venue established in 1878 in Cedarhurst, New York (now Lawrence), making it the oldest country club in the United States. In 1917, the course was expanded to 18-holes. The course was designed by Tom Bendelow (1900), A. W. Tillinghast (1925), Devereux Emmet (1917), Perry Maxwell (1939), Gil Hanse (2009), Jim Wagner (2009) and Stephen Kay. The 18-hole course features 6251 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. The Scottish-style links course measures 6,251 yards from its longest tees and has a par value of 70. Because of space limitations, several holes on the mostly flat terrain cross each other, and the fairway mounding creates uneven lies while water hazards and constant wind add more challenge. Two holes are actually played along the Atlantic Ocean in very windy conditions. The par 4, 454 yard 9th hole is regarded as one of the 100 best golf holes in America. There are many holes that provide real excitement during the round, including the multiple Cape holes tempting the golfer to take on the water. Play is limited to members at this private facility.

Rockliffe Hall Golf Course

North Yorkshire

Rockliffe Hall Golf Course is an 18-hole championship parkland layout opened in 2009, set within a 350-acre estate on the banks of the River Tees at Hurworth-on-Tees, near Darlington in County Durham. The course was designed by Marc Westenborg of Hawtree Limited — one of Britain's oldest and most established golf course architecture firms, operating since 1912 — whose other work includes the Old Course at Vilamoura and involvement with Royal Birkdale. The estate itself dates to the 1700s, when it was known as Pilmore House, and the late nineteenth century landscaping undertaken by the Backhouse and Waterhouse families contributed many of the natural contours and mature features that the golf course now incorporates. The resort is owned by Steve Gibson, who also owns Middlesbrough Football Club, whose training headquarters are sited within the Rockliffe property. From the back tees the course measures 7,879 yards to a par of 72, a length that places it among the longest layouts in Europe. Four of its par fives exceed 600 yards, including the seventh hole at 664 yards. Five distinct sets of tees allow the course to be played at significantly reduced yardages by golfers of all levels. The design makes extensive use of water, with three purpose-built lakes and eight reed beds integrated into the layout. The par-three fifth, which plays to an island green, is widely regarded as the signature hole, while the 242-yard par-three fifteenth, where water cuts along the right side for much of the hole's length, is considered the most demanding short hole on the card. Bunkering is bold and frequent, particularly around the green complexes, and deep rough penalises offline shots throughout the round. The course has hosted the European Senior Tour since 2013, establishing it as a competitive venue at professional level. The adjacent five-star hotel, spa and clubhouse complete a resort offering that has drawn comparisons, at least in terms of aspiration, to potential Ryder Cup standard facilities in northern England.
