Located at the southern foot of Mount Karasawayama in Tochigi Prefecture, the Karasawa Course is an 18-hole layout set within a prefectural park that offers panoramic views of the Kanto Plain. The course is situated on a south-facing slope, a geographical feature that keeps the terrain relatively warm even during winter months. The fairways are lined with red pines, and the grounds are designed to showcase the changing seasons, featuring cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, lilies in summer, and the scent of matsutake mushrooms in autumn. The course plays to a par of 72 with a total length of 6,201 yards from the regular tees, carrying a course rating of 69.4. The front nine measures 3,062 yards, while the back nine extends to 3,139 yards. The greens are maintained in Korean grass, a variety selected for its resilience against the summer heat, allowing for consistent playing conditions throughout the warmer months. Strategic challenges are woven throughout the layout, with the difficulty often dictated by the terrain and penalty areas. The fifth hole, the hardest on the course at handicap 1, is a par 4 that requires a precise approach to a green guarded by bunkers and out-of-bounds. The back nine features the fifteenth, a demanding 403-yard par 4 that ranks as the second-highest handicap hole, where a long accurate drive is essential to reach a green protected by bunkers on the left and right. Signature holes test the golfer’s precision with significant elevation changes and narrow landing zones. The eighth hole presents a unique two-tiered green that is wide across the middle but lacks depth, requiring a high-trajectory shot to hold the putting surface. The seventeenth hole is a downhill par 3 where the fairway slopes sharply to the right, bordered by a ditch on the left and a red penalty area on the right, forcing players to aim carefully to avoid the hazards. The course is part of the Karasawa Golf Club, which was established in April 1961 by a group of enthusiasts from the cities of Sano, Ashikaga, Tatebayashi, Ota, and Kiryu. The club operates on a member-led basis, managing both the Karasawa Course and the adjacent Miyoshi Course. The facility hosts numerous internal competitions throughout the year, including monthly tournaments that regularly draw over 130 participants, maintaining a strong culture of competitive play among its membership.
