Kanuma 72 Country Club

栃木県

Located in Ushinoki-cho, Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, Kanuma 72 Country Club is a 45-hole facility set on a gentle hillside overlooking the Kanto Plain. Opened in July 1975 and designed by Ichikawa Soko Dozai, the course is divided into three distinct 18-hole layouts: the Tsukuba Course, the Nantai Course, and the Fuji Course. The property sits at a convenient distance from the Kanuma and Toga interchanges, offering panoramic views of the surrounding agricultural plains from its elevated position. The Nantai Course is characterized by moderate undulations and strategic layouts that challenge golfers with its varied terrain. It features fairways with appropriate slopes, including powerful downhill holes and dogleg configurations. The course design incorporates strategic elements that require careful shot selection, with specific holes like the first par-4 presenting a gentle downhill tee shot where positioning off the left side of the fairway is advised to manage the approach to a sloping green. In contrast, the Tsukuba Course offers a wider, more open and relaxed atmosphere. Its fairways are broad, providing a sense of spaciousness throughout the round. The greens on this layout utilize Tif Eagle grass, which is noted for its strength during the summer months. While the fairways are generally forgiving, certain holes, such as the first par-4, present a downhill approach to a green that does not hold the ball well, requiring precise distance control. The Fuji Course provides a separate, flat layout that is generally considered accessible to beginners. Despite its flat nature, the greens on the Fuji Course feature significant undulation and contouring, ensuring that putting remains a test of skill. The holes here often feature gentle doglegs and downhill tee shots, creating a layout that is described as serviceable for birdie hunting while maintaining an aesthetic appeal. The facility is managed by Tohoku Jukan Development Co., Ltd., and includes a 300-yard driving range with 17 bays. The club is affiliated with both the Japan Golf Association (JGA) and the Korea Golf Association (KGA). The course is situated on a south-facing slope, a geographical feature that keeps the terrain relatively warm even during winter months. Strategic challenges are woven throughout the layout, with the difficulty often dictated by the terrain and penalty areas. The fifth hole, the hardest on the course at handicap 1, is a par 4 that requires a precise approach to a green guarded by bunkers and out-of-bounds. The back nine features the fifteenth, a demanding 403-yard par 4 that ranks as the second-highest handicap hole, where a long accurate drive is essential to reach a green protected by bunkers on the left and right. Signature holes test the golfer’s precision with significant elevation changes and narrow landing zones. The eighth hole presents a unique two-tiered green that is wide across the middle but lacks depth, requiring a high-trajectory shot to hold the putting surface. The seventeenth hole is a downhill par 3 where the fairway slopes sharply to the right, bordered by a ditch on the left and a red penalty area on the right, forcing players to aim carefully to avoid the hazards. The course is part of the Karasawa Golf Club, which was established in April 1961 by a group of enthusiasts from the cities of Sano, Ashikaga, Tatebayashi, Ota, and Kiryu. Karasburg Golf Club

ǁKharas Region

Karasuyama Castle CC

栃木県

Karasuyama Castle Country Club is a 27-hole facility located in Nasukarasuyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The course is situated on a 1.8 million square meter site and is divided into three distinct nine-hole courses: Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sanmaru. The layout was designed by renowned architect Seiichi Inoue, who is also credited with designing courses such as Kasumigaseki, Takaidai, and Yomiuri Golf Club. Inoue’s design philosophy emphasizes both ornate aesthetic beauty and high-level strategic complexity, creating a course that balances visual appeal with challenging tactical demands. Each of the three courses plays to a par of 36, with total yardage varying by tee selection. The Honmaru course features a signature par-4 eighth hole, which measures 466 yards from the black tees. This hole is described as a strategic challenge where the ideal drive line is between two mounds on the left side, while a safer route lies to the right. The ninth hole on the Honmaru course is a demanding par-5 measuring 554 yards from the black tees. It plays as a slightly S-shaped, uphill hole where the green is elevated, requiring precise distance control on the second shot to avoid the shallow out-of-bounds on the right. The Ninomaru course is home to notable short holes that test precision. The fourth hole is a par-3 measuring 177 yards from the black tees, featuring a water hazard that guards the green. The description notes that the water is a "beautiful trap" and that players must account for the wind and the slope of the large mound behind the green. The eighth hole on the Ninomaru course is a par-3 measuring 212 yards from the black tees. It is a light uphill shot where the distance can be deceptive, requiring players to aim for the fairway and avoid the right and left-rear corners of the green. The Sanmaru course includes a challenging par-3 second hole that measures 182 yards from the black tees. This is a downhill shot where the left green is protected by out-of-bounds on the left side, while the right green is slightly shorter than the yardage suggests. The course offers multiple tee boxes, including black, blue, white, gold, and red, allowing for varied difficulty levels. The facility also includes a large practice range with night lighting, a clubhouse, and on-site dining and accommodation options. Karasuyama Castle Country Club has hosted significant tournament history, including the 49th and 54th Japan Women's Open Golf Championships in 2021 and 2024. The course is rated with a Course Handicap Index ranging from 70.7 to 75.2 depending on the combination of nine holes played and the tee color selected. The club maintains a standard pace of play target of 2 hours and 15 minutes for nine holes and enforces strict etiquette regarding course maintenance and safety.
