The course is characterized by challenging terrain with rolling hills, numerous lakes and ponds, deep ravines, and thousands of mature trees throughout. These natural features create a rugged landscape that tests golfers of all abilities. Highland Springs offers amenities including a Yamaha Golf Car Fleet with GPS technology, a grass driving range, two putting greens, clubhouse facilities, pro shop, and snack bar. The course is open seasonally from early April through October, with tee times available from sunrise to sunset. It is recognized as one of the best golf designs in the area and accommodates corporate events and outings. The facility maintains a dress code policy for all players.

The signature par-3 hole number 15 is perched on a rock ledge at the base of a 100-foot waterfall created by the headwaters of the Cullasaja River, which Golf Digest Senior Editor Ron Whitten described as "the most memorable par three in golf." The course and waterfall have been featured in Golf Digest, Golf Course Management, and Carolinas Green Magazine.
