Whitemarsh Valley Country Club features an 18-hole course designed by George C. Thomas Jr. It was Thomas's first 18-hole course design, located just north of Philadelphia on his family's estate. The club is nestled into 125 acres of pristine landscape just outside of Philadelphia. The course incorporates the Wissahickon Creek and embraces lovely rolling meadows with well-groomed fairways and greens that keep the course difficult yet friendly.
Thomas used sprawling bunkers with jagged thumbs to shape many holes, while many of the greens accept run-up shots, making the course playable for the average golfer, though clever shaping requires precise shots to get close to many hole locations. The course was ranked in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest from 1969-1970 and was part of the original 200 Toughest Courses list from 1966-1968.
Whitemarsh hosted the 1917 Patriotic Open (played in place of the U.S. Open that year), the 1934 U.S. Women's Amateur, and the annual Philadelphia IVB Classic on the PGA Tour from 1963-1980. Notable winners of the IVB included Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus (three times), Tom Kite, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Jenkins.
