Foxburg Country Club, established in 1887, is the oldest golf course in continuous use in the United States. It is located in Foxburg, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, approximately 55 miles north of Pittsburgh on a hill rising about 300 feet above the Allegheny River. Joseph M. Fox designed the first 5 holes in 1887, and in 1893 the course was expanded to 9 holes, resembling the present course. The course is 5,202 yards with a slope of 113.
Foxburg is built on a gently sloping hillside with play running uphill and downhill most of the way, featuring immaculately groomed fairways and greens surrounded by small groves of oak, sycamores, maples, dogwood, sumac and nut trees. The course is short with narrow fairways and extremely small, undulating greens; while long hitters have an advantage in golf, at Foxburg that advantage is only realized if they hit straight and are able to read the greens. The course features Foxburg's signature oak tree that blocks errant approach shots.
The course was listed in 2007 on the National Register of Historic Places. The clubhouse was built in 1912 as a private residence and acquired by the country club in 1942, housing the American Golf Hall of Fame on the second floor with a priceless collection of golf clubs and other exhibits depicting golf's 400-year history.
