Royal North Devon Golf Club is England's oldest golf course, designed by Old Tom Morris in 1864. Located on 170 acres of Northam Burrows common land near Westward Ho! in Devon, the course offers authentic links golf with distinctive characteristics shaped by its coastal setting. The layout features challenging holes defined by huge dunes interspersed with flat fairways and vast bunkers, creating varied terrain across 650 acres of common land. The course gained its "Royal" designation in 1867 when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, became patron. Known for its unique and demanding character, particularly in windy conditions, Royal North Devon presents a stern test despite being described as surprisingly forgiving. The conditioning is consistently excellent, with greens maintained to championship standards. Notable views extend toward the Bristol Channel and Lundy Island.
