The Springhaven Club

PA

The Springhaven Club is one of the earliest golf clubs in the United States, founded in October 1896 by a group of Philadelphia-area women. Located in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, the club moved to its current 60-acre property in 1903 and opened formally on July 9, 1904. The original course design is attributed to founding member Ida Dixon, believed to be America's first female golf architect. The course has evolved through several notable renovations. Horace Rawlins, winner of the first U.S. Open in 1895, served as the club's first golf professional and made design modifications based on his extensive experience. In 1910, English professional Herbert H. Barker added 50 distinctive rectangular bunkers. World-renowned architect William Flynn contributed significant changes in the 1920s, including modernizing the bunkering strategy. Andy Campbell, a Scottish professional who played in multiple U.S. Opens, served as head professional for 25 years beginning in 1908 and oversaw further course evolution. Despite these renovations, the course has remained remarkably faithful to its original design philosophy. The club hosts several prestigious tournaments, including the Springhaven Cup Invitational (first officially contested in 1923), the Horace Rawlins Invitational (established 1974), and the Ida Dixon Cup for women golfers (continuous since 1917).
