The Challenge at Cypress Hills

TX

The Challenge at Cypress Hills is an 18-hole par 71 course measuring 6,762 yards from the longest tees, designed by Clint Mace Sr. and opened in 2009. The greens were reconditioned in 2010 with Champion Bermuda grass. Located in Waskom just minutes from the state line, the course is popular with residents of both Texas and Louisiana. The course leverages East Texas terrain to create a unique and demanding layout that tests every part of a player's game, requiring accuracy off the tee, good course management, and precision approach shots and putting. The back nine is slightly shorter with one par 5 but plays approximately 4 to 5 strokes harder, with each hole offering unique challenges. All fairways are tree-lined with tall Texas pines throughout the course. Greens range from 20 to 40 yards and vary in shape from small ovals to long oblongs, with some raised, turtle-top shaped, or flat designs, and most feature slopes, tiers, or ridges for putting interest. The course has only six bunkers filled with white, soft sand.

The Challenge at Manele

HI

The 7,039-yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. Carved out of the rugged coast, the Challenge at Manele sprawls across ancient lava fields, with 180-degree ocean panoramas from every hole. The course is located on the southern coast of Lanai, Hawaii, perched atop 200-foot cliffs, and is operated as part of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay. The five-tee concept challenges the best golfers – tee shots over natural gorges and ravines must be precise – and novice players will enjoy practicing their swing amid spectacular vistas. The course is notable for its dramatic ocean-side holes, particularly the twelfth hole with 200 yards of churning waves to cross, and three ocean-cove holes, including the par-3 12th and dogleg-right par-4 17th. Jack Nicklaus considers Manele Golf Course to be one of his finest designs, ideal for a championship event, yet comfortable for a round among friends. The course has received recognition including Conde Nast Traveler Top 100 Golf Resorts and Golf Magazine Gold Medal Resort. Manele, previously called The Challenge at Manele, unseated Kapalua's Plantation course as the highest-ranked public course in Hawaii several years ago.
