Bethpage Black

NY

Bethpage Black Course is a public golf course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island, New York. The 18-hole course features 7,065 yards for a par of 71 and opened in 1936. The course was designed by Joseph H. Burbeck, who was assisted by golf architect A. W. Tillinghast. It is the most difficult of Bethpage's five courses, and has a famous warning sign at the first tee placed in the early 1980s, which reads "WARNING The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers". The course demands precise shot-shaping off the tee with diagonal hazards and narrowing fairways, while greens are generally elevated with deep bunkers guarding them. The signature hole is the 4th hole, a 517-yard par 5 with trees framing the fairway, featuring criss-crossing bunkers and playing uphill on a double dogleg. Notable par 3s include the 8th hole at 210 yards with a pond guarding the green, and the 17th hole at 207 yards, the most bunkered green on the course. The course has hosted the 2002 U.S. Open, 2009 U.S. Open, 2019 PGA Championship, and 2025 Ryder Cup. Designed in the mid-1930s to be "the public Pine Valley," it became the darling of the USGA in the early 2000s, the PGA Tour as host of the 2011 and 2016 Barclays, and is now embraced by the PGA of America.

Bethpage State Park Golf Courses

NY

Bethpage State Park is located in suburban Long Island in close proximity to New York City and features five 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the world-renowned Bethpage Black. The five courses are the Black course (par-71, 7468 yards from back tees), Red course (par-70, 7092 yards), Blue course (par-72, 6678 yards), Green course (par-71, 6378 yards), and Yellow course (par-71, 6324 yards). Famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast designed three new golf courses (Black, Red and Blue) and modified the Lenox Hills Course which became the Green Course, while the Yellow Course was designed by Alfred Tull and opened in 1958. The Black Course is the most difficult of Bethpage's five courses and has a famous warning sign at the first tee which reads "WARNING The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers." The Red Course is considered by most to be the toughest of the park's non-Black tracks and features long par-4s and dogleg holes. The Blue course calls for a series of blind shots to hidden landing areas and elevated greens on the front nine, which gives way to a flatter, shorter, and easier back nine. The Yellow Course is considered by many to be the easiest of the five courses. The Black Course hosted the United States Open in 2002 and 2009, the Barclays in 2012 and 2016, the PGA Championship in 2019, and the Ryder Cup in 2025, and will also host the 2028 KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the PGA Championship in 2033. Bethpage being selected in 2002 as the first publicly owned and operated golf course to host the U.S. Open was seen as an egalitarian move by the USGA.

Bethpage Yellow Golf Course

NY

The 18-hole Yellow course at the Bethpage State Park Golf Course facility in Farmingdale features 6,316 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 70.1 and it has a slope rating of 121 on Rye grass. Designed by Alfred H. Tull, ASGCA, the Yellow golf course opened in 1958. The Yellow Course, designed by Alfred Tull, was opened in 1958 and was built mostly from scratch, and partially from holdovers that survived the rerouting of A.W. Tillinghast's original Blue Course. At 6,085 yards from the regular tees, Yellow is the shortest course of the five. The course is generally considered the easiest at Bethpage. While the shortest and possibly easiest of the five Bethpage courses, there's still fantastic land movement and plenty of fun holes left behind from Tillinghast's original Blue Course. The Yellow Course features many of the most notable Tillinghast Holes at the Bethpage facility. Holes 3 through 6 and 11 through 14 have excellent variability of terrain and club selection. The course features strong individual holes such as the famous Tillinghast "Reef" 12th. Bethpage State Park is the largest government-owned golf complex in America, with five courses sprawling out from a central clubhouse. Located in Farmingdale on Long Island near New York City, the Yellow Course serves as an accessible option for golfers of varying skill levels while maintaining the quality design characteristics associated with the Bethpage complex.
