The course features a traditional New Zealand tree-lined parkland layout and is split by a road that is now State Highway 50.
The current course layout hosted the first ever New Zealand Open in 1907, won by amateur Arthur Duncan, and again in 1919, won by E.S. Douglas. Over the years, the course has been the site of many New Zealand and inter-provincial tournaments. The club was home to notable early Māori golf champions including Kurupo Tareha, the 1903 New Zealand Amateur champion, and his son Kapi, with a traditional Māori carving depicting both housed in the clubhouse.
Fairway irrigation provides excellent year-round playing conditions. The course features rolling fairways with several sharp dog-legs and many green-side bunkers. The tree-lined layout is characterized as an easy walking course that provides a challenging test of golf.
