Shipyard Golf Club comprises 27 holes of golf arranged in three nine-hole courses: the Clipper and Galleon courses, both designed by George W. Cobb in 1970, and the Brigantine course, designed by Willard C. Byrd in 1982. Located on Hilton Head Island's south end within Shipyard Plantation, the course is nestled among majestic Carolina pine trees, flowering magnolias, and moss-draped oaks. Two of the three interconnecting nines are combined to form an 18-hole round, allowing players of various skill levels to experience different combinations and challenges.
The Clipper course is considered the most difficult of the three nines, featuring long fairways and numerous sand and water hazards requiring precision play. The Galleon and Brigantine courses wind through lagoons, ponds, and low-country wetlands, with greens well-protected by bunkers and elevated for added challenge. The layout presents both playable and challenging experiences, with narrow fairways, strategic doglegs, and Diamond Zoysia grass greens situated among mature trees.
Shipyard Golf Club was the former home of the Hilton Head Seniors International from 1982 to 1984 and was rated one of the finest layouts on the Champions Tour. The course remains one of the oldest and most respected on Hilton Head Island, known for its scenic water features, including an area known as "Alligator Cove," and its appeal to both local residents and visiting golfers.
