Royal New Kent is an 18-hole course featuring 7,440 yards of golf for a par of 72. Designed by Mike Strantz as his third solo effort, Strantz is regarded as one of the most influential golf architects of the past 25 years even though he designed just seven courses individually. Located between Diascund Creek and the Chickahominy River, close to Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia, the course is situated on 282 acres that presents golfers with open spaces and panoramic vistas.
Strantz modeled the course after two of his favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybunion, two of the finest golf courses in the world. The course requires focus and concentration on the second shots as there are varieties of danger and difficulty lurking, including 105 strategically placed bunkers, most of them large and/or deep. The large greens are relatively firm and have significant sloping, mounding and many have multiple tiers.
In 1997, Royal New Kent opened to outstanding reviews, including Golf Digest's highest honor, "Best New Upscale Public Course." A complete renovation was completed in March of 2019, and the renovation won Golf Inc. Magazine's 2020 Renovation of the Year award.
