The Highland Course at Primland opened in 2006, designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Steel. The 18-hole course has been ranked as the No. 1 Public Course in Virginia by both Golf Digest and Golfweek. The course features 7,034 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course is an Audubon-certified all bent grass greens course.

The Highland Course winds through the Lodge at Primland's mountainous terrain, playing across ridgetops and over valleys while combining challenging golf with breathtaking scenery. The course features an unusual opening sequence with pars 5-3-5-3-4-5, and is characterized by some of the largest greens encountered in golf, large elevation changes, and wide fairways, though leaving the fairway can often result in a lost ball down steep hillsides. The signature opening hole is a 536-yard par 5 where the tee shot is relatively unassuming until climbers reach a rise in the fairway, from which the fairway flows downhill between natural rock formations down to a lumpy infinity edge green with stunning views.

The course was rated one of America's 10 best new courses by Travel and Leisure Golf in 2007 and named the best new public course in America (75 and over) by Golf Digest in January 2008. The course is ranked by Golf Magazine as one of The Top 100 Courses You Can Play.
