Pittsburgh Field Club is a private country club established in 1882 and located six miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania. The 18-hole course features 6,611 yards of golf for a par of 71. The course was originally designed by Alexander H. Findlay in 1914. The club's website notes that numerous architects have revised the course, including A.W. Tillinghast, Willie Park Jr., Emil Loeffler and John McGlynn, William Irvin, Robert Trent Jones, Arthur Hills, Craig Schreiner, and Tripp Davis.
One notable feature is an elevator that takes golfers from the 17th green to the 18th tee. The notoriously hilly Pittsburgh terrain created routing challenges; the final hole plays severely uphill for 275 yards. The course rating is 72.9 with a slope rating of 134 on bent grass greens.
The Field Club hosted the PGA Championship in 1937, when Denny Shute successfully defended his match play title. The club also hosted the Western Open in 1959 as part of Pittsburgh's bicentennial celebration. Before winning the U.S. Open in 1953 at nearby Oakmont, Ben Hogan had to qualify for the national championship at Pittsburgh Field Club.
