Oakmont Country Club is located in Plum and Oakmont, Pennsylvania, in the East Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh, and was established in 1903. The course was designed by Henry Fownes, who spent a year building it on old farmland with a crew of 150 men and mule teams, creating an ideal links-style layout. The course features 18 holes and par 72. Straddling the Allegheny River Valley, it uniquely has virtually no water hazards and, since 2007, almost no trees. With a USGA course rating of 77.5 and 168 bunkers, it is generally regarded as one of the most difficult courses in the United States. One of Oakmont's most famous hazards is the Church Pews bunker on the third and fourth holes, measuring approximately 100 by 40 yards and featuring 13 grass-covered traversing ridges. The picturesque 18th hole has long been touted as one of the best inland finishing holes in America, exemplifying the entire course as a tough but fair hole that rewards good shots and punishes bad ones. The golf course is regarded as the oldest top-ranked golf course in the United States and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Oakmont most recently hosted its record tenth U.S. Open in 2025.
