Lead Country Club was organized in 1922 and the course was laid out by John Bland, a notable course designer. The course is a 9-hole, par 36 layout measuring 3,331 yards. Located 7 miles south of Lead on Highway 85 and off Rochford Road, the course naturally winds through tree-lined meadows. The course sits at 6,200 feet elevation, placing it in the high-altitude Black Hills region.

The greens are small but receptive and the natural slope makes for some interesting reads. The course's natural slope and tree-lined meadows make for a challenging experience. Slope ratings vary by tee selection, with ratings ranging from 128 to 132. Players should anticipate their ball to fly longer than normal due to the altitude. The elevated first tee is a notable feature of the course layout. Designer John Bland went on to later design Belle Fourche, Custer, and Spearfish courses, among others in the region.
