Cassique is a par-72 links-style golf course designed by Tom Watson for his North American debut, located on Kiawah Island where the Kiawah River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,050-yard course winds through maritime forest and marshlands, featuring a walkable layout inspired by Celtic links courses. Watson's design philosophy emphasizes strategic flexibility, with holes that can be played multiple ways depending on wind conditions, allowing golfer creativity to play a key role.
The Front Nine offers true links-style play characteristic of Irish and Scottish courses, while the Back Nine transitions to tree-lined holes opening toward marshlands and the Kiawah River. Notable features include Mount Watson, once Charleston County's highest point offering panoramic views, and Hole 15, celebrated for its ocean and marsh vistas. Hole 9's false front is known to challenge golfers.
Since opening in 2000, Cassique has received consistent recognition, including Golf Digest's "America's Best New Private Courses," Golfweek's "Top 100 Residential Courses," and Golf Digest's "Top 100 Modern Courses." The course has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the 2009 US Mid-Amateur Championship and 2023 USGA Four-Ball Championship. A state-of-the-art Golf Learning Center provides instruction and club fitting services.
