Belfair is set along the banks of the Colleton River in the heart of Bluffton, South Carolina. The facility features two championship golf courses designed by Tom Fazio. The West Course opened in 1996 as a par-72 layout measuring 7,111 yards from the championship tees, while the East Course opened in 1999 as a par-71 layout measuring 6,900 yards from the championship tees and is reminiscent of the links courses of Scotland while showcasing the area's deep-water views, fresh water lakes and lagoons. The East is known for wide fairways with an open feel, while the West tends to be slightly more challenging with smaller greens and narrower fairways.

The East Course was created to give members the opportunity to play a links style game with numerous naturalized sand areas, native grasses and an open landscape, while the West Course with its beautiful oaks and soaring pines provides a more traditional and manicured setting. Both courses are ranked among the "Best Residential Courses" in the United States by Golfweek Magazine and are perennial recipients of Golf Digest's "Best Courses in South Carolina" list.

Belfair was the first golf community selected to host the 52nd 2019 PGA Professional Championship, with 312 players advancing from the 41 PGA Section Championships and past champions, with the low 20 scorers earning berths in the 2019 PGA Championship held at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
