Tryon Country Club

NC, United States

Established in 1916, Tryon Country Club is one of the oldest private golf clubs in North Carolina. The nine-hole golf course was originally laid out in 1914 and the course opened in 1917, with the layout designed by noted golfer Donald Ross. The course is a par 36 with two par 3's, five par 4's, and two par 5's, offering five tee sets ranging from 1,786 yards to 3,170 yards. Ross designed the nine-hole layout to play to 18 holes by utilizing two different sets of tee placements within each hole's tee box. The course is nestled in a picturesque valley in the Foothills of Western North Carolina, where the temperate climate is ideally suited for year-round golf. The layout utilizes the natural contours of the land in the valley formed by Little Creek. The course features small, undulating bent grass greens and tree-lined Bermuda fairways. The small bent-grass greens and tight surrounds are the core defense of the course. Tryon is a rare survivor of the "nine plays as eighteen" design solution executed at the scale of a town course and then preserved substantially intact, recognized for its 1922 clubhouse and golf landscape together on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Within Ross's North Carolina portfolio, Tryon represents Ross's earliest original work in the North Carolina mountains, predating better-known western-NC commissions by several years.
