Clearview Golf Course

OH, United States

Clearview Golf Club was established in 1946 by William Powell in East Canton, Ohio, with nine holes opening to the public in 1948. The course expanded to 18 holes in 1978. The 18-hole course features 5,980 yards from the longest tees for a par of 69, with a course rating of 67.2 and a slope rating of 105. The layout includes gently rolling terrain and undulating greens that serve as a challenge to experienced golfers while providing an enjoyable round for new players. The view from a hill inspired Powell to give Clearview its name. Clearview Golf Club was the first golf course in the United States to be built, owned, and operated by an African American. William Powell, who faced racial discrimination after returning from World War II, decided to build his own course where people of all colors would be welcome. Although not formally trained as a golf course architect, Powell integrated existing trees into the design and arranged the two nine-hole loops to begin and end at the clubhouse. Clearview Golf Club was placed on the Ohio Historical Register in 2001. The course underwent renovations sponsored by the PGA of America in 1999 and was renovated again in 2004 by Hurdzan-Fry Golf Course Design. In 2001, the course began to operate as a non-profit under the name Clearview Legacy Foundation. Each year Clearview hosts an annual Celebrity Tournament and an event with LPGA Tour players.
