Five Lakes

Essex

Five Lakes Golf Club is located between Maldon and Colchester in Essex, near the village of Tolleshunt Knights, in the scenic Essex countryside. The club's main course is the Lakes Course, an 18-hole championship layout designed by European Tour legend Neil Coles. Measuring 6,267 yards from the Silver tees with a par 72, the course features gentle undulations, strategic water hazards, well-placed bunkers, mature woodlands, and new trees with hedgerows across 320 acres of rolling parkland. The course demands long drives and accurate approach play, with views of lakes and wildlife throughout the round. The Links Course, a 9-hole par 3 course, offers a contrasting challenge and was transformed from the original 18-hole Links layout. Both courses are maintained year-round without resorting to temporary tees or greens during winter months, except for par 3s on the Lakes Course. The club hosts active men's, seniors, ladies, and juniors sections with dedicated tee times and a full tournament calendar. The Lakes Course has hosted prestigious events including the Nick Faldo Challenge and regional PGA events over the years. The resort complex includes practice facilities with a covered driving range, three practice putting greens, and a short game area with pitching, chipping, and bunker facilities. The club became part of the Potters Resorts portfolio and underwent significant improvements including a redesigned pro shop, new bar facilities, and updated changing rooms.

Flackwell Heath Golf Club

Buckinghamshire 1 upcoming event

Flackwell Heath Golf Club is an 18-hole course located in South Buckinghamshire between Beaconsfield and High Wycombe, set on undulating wooded heathland that can be glimpsed from the south side of the M40 motorway east of the town. The club was founded in 1904 as the Wycombe and Bourne End Golf Club, after Minchins Farm was purchased by three High Wycombe businessmen in 1902. An initial nine-hole layout was designed by James Sherlock, professional at the Oxford University Club, with a second nine added in 1907 by the club's first professional, John Turner, at which point the club was renamed Flackwell Heath. The course measures 6,142 yards from the white tees and plays to a par of 71, with a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 124. The course has been shaped by several notable architects over its history. Harry Colt consulted on alterations during the 1920s, and in 1964 Frederick W. Hawtree designed two new holes, the current 15th and 16th. More recently, professional golfer and television commentator Ken Brown has advised on ongoing improvements. The terrain is markedly undulating, with the course divided broadly between flatter holes on the upper section and more steeply sloping holes on the lower ground, requiring considerable shot-making ability and club selection throughout. The par-three 3rd, played through a narrow gully of trees to an elongated green, and the downhill par-three 5th are among the more distinctive holes on the layout. The greens have long been regarded as a defining feature of the course. Writing in 1923, the golf correspondent and Walker Cup player Bernard Darwin described them as having turf that was true and velvety, gently undulating without ever being either dull or unfair. The course is a private members club welcoming visitors on weekdays, and there is no significant professional tournament history associated with it.

The course features four par 4s, four par 3s, and one par 5, with a total yardage of 466 yards on the signature fifth hole. The layout is welcoming to players of all skill levels, with no forced carries to intimidate junior golfers, women, and seniors, while still offering strategic challenges for lower handicap players. The course occupies land that originally held Maple Crest Golf Course, an 18-hole facility developed in the 1920s that was reduced to 12 holes in the 1950s due to Tri State Tollway construction. Following community efforts to preserve the property in the late 1980s, the Pleasant Dale Park District and City of Countryside acquired it. Flagg Creek's design emphasizes accessibility without sacrificing strategic interest. The course received recognition shortly after opening, earning a Chicago Tribune top-ten ranking among Illinois 9-hole courses in 1993 and winning Chicagoland Golf Readers Choice Award for best 9-hole course in the area in 1995 and 2006.
