Club de Golf La Cañada logo Club de Golf La Cañada

Andalucía

Club de Golf La Cañada is an 18-hole parkland course situated within the Sotogrande estate near Guadiaro, in the municipality of San Roque, Cádiz. The course opened in 1982 with an original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the architect responsible for the nearby Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. A second nine was added in 2002, designed by Dave Thomas, whose other local work includes San Roque Old Course. The full layout plays to a par of 71 and stretches to approximately 5,917 metres from the back tees, with a slope rating of 128 for men. It was the first municipal golf course on the Costa del Sol, developed to provide more accessible golf within the otherwise exclusive Sotogrande estate. The terrain is gently undulating rather than flat, making it comfortably walkable, and the course winds through tree-lined fairways featuring a mix of indigenous species including cork and olive trees. Bermuda grass fairways lead to fast, heavily contoured bent grass greens that are widely considered the standout feature of the layout. Water hazards and bunkering add variety throughout, and the course's elevated position provides views across the Guadiaro River valley and the Mediterranean Sea. The signature hole is the par-4 18th, which demands a tee shot carrying a large ravine - the cañada, or gully, from which the course takes its name - before a second shot to an exposed green. The par-3 17th, requiring a carry over a lake to a well-guarded green, is also frequently cited as one of the more memorable challenges on the course. Wind is a significant factor across much of the layout, adding difficulty that the relatively modest yardage might not otherwise suggest.
