The front nine's sixth hole is rated stroke index 1, with the seventh at stroke index 3, and both demand accurate driving and approach play on a course where course management is generally rewarded. The 18-hole layout was designed by five-time Open Champion John Henry Taylor, who reportedly had members lining up across the fairways to clear loose stones during construction - a task said to have taken just two days. The course plays to a par of 71 over around 6,243 yards, with a course rating of 71.0 and a slope of 129. The layout is carved through the rolling Gwili Valley parkland, with tree-lined fairways, significant changes in elevation, several blind tee shots, and Taylor's characteristically strategic use of a relatively compact acreage. The opening hole is a long, uphill par four of close to 440 yards that immediately tests accuracy, with out of bounds to the right and trees down the left. Tricky, undulating greens are considered the primary defence of the course, and breaking 70 is an uncommon achievement. The 17th, known as Oak, is a 390-yard left-to-right dogleg par four whose two-tier green catches many approaches on the wrong level. The par-five 18th, at 555 yards with out of bounds running the full length of the right side, provides a demanding finish. The course offers panoramic views across Carmarthenshire and towards Carmarthen Bay. In terms of competitive history, Carmarthen has hosted both the Men's and Ladies' Welsh Team Championships, placing it among the more significant venues for representative golf in Wales.
