Wrangaton Golf Course

Devon

The origins of the course at Wrangaton Golf Club can be traced back to the club's formation in 1895. The modern day layout extends to around 180 acres on the edge of Dartmoor, consisting of common land, parkland, woodland and pasture. The course plays to a par of 70 with an overall length of 6,065 yards (36 out then 34 in), with only two par fives on the scorecard, at the 8th and 11th holes. The longer front nine holes are shaped by the moorland landscape and the back nine holes contrast this with tree-lined parkland fairways. Until 1991 it was a nine-hole course but the acquisition of an additional 130 acres of open moorland, plus later purchases of 50 acres of adjacent farmland and woodland, the original nine holes became the front nine, with the back nine created in the parkland setting of the new area. Highlights include the only par three on the outward half at the 164 yard 4th; the tough par four 15th (rated stroke index 1); and the left doglegging par four closing hole. Originally known as South Devon Golf Club, Wrangaton adopted its new name in 1922. The land for the course was donated to the club by Elizabeth Carew, who inherited the property from her father, Sir Walter Palk. The Wrangaton Golf Club closed permanently in 2023.

Wychwood Park Golf Club

Cheshire

Wychwood Park Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course located near Weston, just outside Crewe in Cheshire, with easy access from Junction 16 of the M6. The course was designed by Hawtree Ltd, with Ken Moodie and Marc Westenborg credited as the principal architects, and opened for play in 2002. It measures up to 7,213 yards from the championship tees and plays to a par of 72, with tees and greens built to USGA specification. The course is set within rolling Cheshire countryside, incorporating numerous lakes, streams, and protected wildlife areas across the layout, and up to four tee positions per hole allow golfers of varying standards to engage with the course. Water is a recurring feature throughout the round and demands careful course management on many holes. The par-five 7th is particularly testing, stretching over 500 yards with a split fairway and a substantial carry over an environmentally protected area. The par-three 17th, playing at around 216 yards from the back tees, is widely regarded as the course's signature hole, requiring a near-full carry over water to a green that draws comparisons with the 16th at Augusta National. The par-three 6th is similarly well regarded for its combination of aesthetic quality and technical challenge. Within a year of opening the course hosted the 2003 Countryside Properties Classic on the EuroPro Tour, and has since been used regularly by the Manchester District Alliance, the Northern PGA, and as a venue for European Tour Qualifying School. The facility operates as a hotel and golf resort, with over 100 bedrooms on site, and has passed through several ownership groups since opening, currently trading as Wychwood Park Hotel and Golf Club.
