USF The Claw Golf Course

The Claw at USF was an 18-hole public golf course located on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida. Designed by architect William F. Mitchell and built in 1967, the course featured a par of 71 and measured 6,863 yards. The course featured long, tight fairways lined with majestic oaks, towering cypress and pines, and was home to alligators, deer, spoonbills and other wildlife. The Claw at USF was one of Tampa Bay's most challenging public golf courses. The course offered 5 sets of tees to accommodate different skill levels. The course record was 64, set by Gary Koch, a former PGA Tour player and NBC Golf Analyst. The course served as the home of the nationally-ranked USF Men's and Women's Golf Teams. The Claw at USF Golf Course opened to the public in 1967 and was enjoyed by many students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The course permanently closed to the public in September 2023, with the University of South Florida deciding to redevelop the property to better align with its institutional mission.

The front nine was carved out of a hillside, creating an open and expansive layout, while the back nine retains a denser tree cover that preserves the natural landscape. The course utilizes Bermuda grass tees and Bentgrass greens, with yardages ranging from 5,116 yards for ladies to 6,748 yards from the back tees. The design prioritizes visibility and flow, featuring minimal elevation changes and no blind shots. Tee positions are generally elevated, resulting in a majority of downhill approach shots that allow for clear target acquisition. The front nine is characterized by its length and openness, with the 1st hole serving as a demanding 538-yard par-5 from the back tees. The back nine introduces more strategic complexity, with the 14th hole standing out as a 400-yard par-4 that plays as the easiest hole on the course (Handicap 2), contrasting with the shorter but more technical 12th hole, a 200-yard par-3 that carries a Handicap 14 rating. Usuki C.C. has established a significant history in competitive golf, hosting the 63rd National Sports Festival women's golf competition in 2008 and the 38th Kyushu Amateur Championship final in 2019. The course is a regular venue for the LPGA Step-Up Tour, having hosted the Fundokin Ladies tournament annually since 2013. Additional tournament history includes the 49th Kyushu Interclub Championship final in 2019 and the 11th Kyushu Mid-Amateur Championship final in 2021.
