The Ross routing is typically tight and features numerous elevated greens and strong, straight holes that flow across the rolling terrain, with many greens steeply contoured and difficult to hit and hold given their size and the dense roughs that surround them. The course has retained nearly all of its original Ross characteristics even after renovations by Robert Trent Jones in 1952 and Mike DeVries in 2007, with tree removal during the most recent renovation allowing the course to return to its original design with more open driving areas and expanded putting surfaces. The rolling terrain provides for an ideal walking course, thus the Club has an extensive caddie program. The course is the site of the first PGA Championship in 1916 and home course of Jess Sweetser, US and British Amateur champion in the 1920s.
